Ventilation systems which are used to control substances hazardous to health are called local exhaust ventilation systems. These can be found in environments such as:
-commercial kitchens where gas and solid fuels are used for cooking
-factory environments where industrial processes release contaminants
-laboratories where chemicals are tested or produced

The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health law declares that whoever is responsible for equipment and devices that deal with such substances finds out what the health hazards are, decides how to prevent harm to health and keep all control measures.

Grease extracts present an elevated fire risk and as such, is obligated to assess the risk, aside of a regularly cleaning. Whoever is responsible for equipment and devices that deal with kitchen grease must take necessary precautions to ensure the safety of all operations around, therefore must ensure a suitable system of maintenance that’s undertaken, and it’s maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair.
Industry has demanded recognized training to demonstrate competence of those involved in the ductwork hygiene sector.
Regulations in the U.S., U.K., Europe and probably in every other developed country, state that employers must carry out safety assessments for the works they undertake, ensuring safety for their employees and the general public.
Every cruise line operator shall make a suitable and sufficient assessment of the risk to the health and safety of his employees and services suppliers to which they are exposed while they are at work, and of the persons on in his employment arising out of or in connection with the conduct by him of his undertaking.
In other words, they all shall be subject to a suitable system of maintenance. And to be more specific, regulations include every equipment and devices a fault in which is liable to result in a failure to comply with any of this Regulations. And certainly, it also includes the commercial kitchen extract systems. (The Workplace (Health, Safety & Welfare) Regulations 1992, UK)
Local fire authorities and insurers agree that a common cause for the spread of a fire is grease build up within the ventilation systems. This can be reduced by regular cleaning and inspection.
Grease in itself cannot cause a fire. Whoever, when combined with oxygen and heat/ignition source, it becomes the fuel that starts a disaster, and especially older accumulated that ignites at a lower temperature.

Insurers want compliance with services and documents given when quoting a restaurant operations insurance policy. That is why it’s so important to only use contractors who offer compliant services.
We understand that our customers may not be experts in Kitchen extract systems maintenance, so they should only appoint a “principal contractor” who is suitably competent to carry out the works. This should reduce the chance of accidents at work and non-compliant business being done.
